The Importance of Adaptation in Corporate Environments
How receptive are you and your team to change? The last few years have seen an incredible array of changes in technology, how we communicate, and much more. The pandemic certainly sped up what was going to be a massive revolution in how we interact with each other, both personally and professionally. Being willing to adapt is a hallmark of keeping your company profitable.
I’m professional corporate magician Cosmo. Each year, I perform hundreds of amazing programs for companies looking for teambuilding activities just like yours in the San Francisco Bay Area. My goal with these articles is to shine a light on many of the challenges facing people in the corporate world.
What Happens with Change?
Change helps us adapt. It’s a foundational principle behind evolution. Without change, species that fail to adapt can go extinct. The same thing happens in the workplace. Without embracing change, your company could go the way of Blockbuster.
But rather than dread change, embrace it. Change can lead to advances, innovations, and ways to make the company run better overall. Embrace the right changes and you’ll see your company gain a competitive edge over the competition. With the right innovations, profits soar and everyone wins. And when that happens, something magical happens: your team’s morale improves! Why? Simple. Everyone wants to be a part of success.
Benefits of Change for the Individual
I mentioned Blockbuster a moment ago. Their failure to adapt can be traced back to their CEOP, who lacked the ability or willingness to adapt. He didn’t have the vision. His refusal to change led to his company’s downfall.
From an individual standpoint, adapting to change has massive benefits. First, you’ll increase your confidence. That positive energy will be palpable to everyone around you. If you’re in a leadership position, you’ll be a better leader if you’re flexible enough to adapt to our changing world.
Even better, you’ll be in a better mental position to tackle any challenges that come your way. You’ll have the right attitude to problem solve and innovate. With this improved mindset, you won’t let problems wear you down. And you’ll feel happier, too!
Adapting For Change
So how do you do it? How do you adopt a mindset to embrace change and nurture innovation? Below are a few simple tips. And here’s the good news: It’s all in your mind! Simply changing your thoughts will put you in a better frame of mind to confront change with open arms.
Adapting to Change Tip #1: Question Everything
When faced with necessary changes, it’s natural to resist. The subconscious part of our mind wants things to remain as they are. Habits and replicable behavior are comfortable. We know what to expect. Or at least we think we do.
To get out of our resistant thinking, we need to challenge what we think we know. If technological demands force product innovation that seems impossible, say to yourself instead, “What if that were possible? What then?” A simple question like this can help lead the charge for massive advances.
Adapting to Change Tip #2: Look at Change as an Opportunity
Many times when we are forced to change, we eventually realize the new way is better. Think about all the new technology you’ve learned over the years. From cell phones to apps, you’ve already embraced plenty of change in the last several years.
Instead of being dragged kicking and screaming toward change, see it as an opportunity. Maybe there have been times in your job when you looked at a product, a service, or a way of doing things in the company and thought it could be better.
But things may have stayed the same. Why? “Because that’s how we’ve always done it” might be the likely response. But see these necessary changes as a way to do, make, or serve better. Again, it’s all about what you tell yourself in your mind. Learn to control that little voice in your head and soon you’ll be moving mountains!
Adapting to Change Tip #3: Chunk It Down
In Neuro-linguistic Programming, there’s a tenant called Chunking Down. As the name implies, it involves breaking down information into smaller bits to make learning or adopting new processes more manageable.
When faced with learning a new task, system, software, process, or whatever, break the new stuff down into smaller pieces of information. Take it one step at a time. While you may have heard that before. Here’s something new: You get to decide how small the steps are!
