4 Ways to Avoid a Summer Slump at Work

Summer is here! It seems like everyone is out having fun in the sun. And you’re stuck at work staring at your computer. Or mitigating another workplace conflict. Being responsible and doing your job is the right thing to do. But summer often causes feelings of jealousy when hearing of the fun summer vacationers are having. But there are ways to give yourself that ‘spark’ to reengage yourself at work.

I’m San Francisco Bay Area corporate entertainer Cosmo. Each year, I perform engaging and jaw-dropping magic for corporate groups just like yours. And each month, I write articles to help HR directors, CEOs, managers, and anyone in the workplace navigate issues at work.

What Causes the Summer Slump at Work?

No big mystery here. One of the biggest causes of a slump at work is summer. If you live in a cold weather environment, you know there are only so many sunny days. Feelings of missing out on the fun can cause even the most dedicated employee to lose their drive and focus.

But the problem is not just motivation. When summer slumps happen, productivity at work is affected. And this in turn can cause headaches for those in charge. Ultimately any kind of prolonged slump can negatively impact your career.

So what can you do to regain your mojo? Below are just a few things you can do to reignite your spark.

Beating the Workplace Summer Slump Tip #1: Learn New Skills

Want an effective way of energizing yourself? Learn a new skill. By learning something new, you’re getting out of your comfort zone. You’re also engaging parts of your brain you don’t normally engage when you do things daily by rote. The best part? By learning something new, you won’t be as bored at work. You’ll be fully engaged as you learn that new skill.

Learning new skills may also ignite new interests at work. And you’ll likely catch the eye of those higher up the corporate food chain, too. When they see you show initiative and drive to learn something new, they’ll be impressed by your moxie.

Beating the Workplace Summer Slump Tip #2: Changing Your Routine

Get rid of workplace boredom by changing your routine. Do you have lunch at the same place every day? Change your routine. Try having lunch at a new place. Expand your horizons and try a new meal.

If you work in the office, try working outside if applicable. If your job prohibits you from working outside, you can still change things indoors. Try working from a different location. And if you work remotely, try working from a different location. Doing the same thing from the same location every day can stifle anyone’s creativity or energy.

Find some simple ways to change your day. That variety will spark different parts of your brain., And you’ll get that added jolt you need to get out of your slump.

Beating the Workplace Summer Slump Tip #3: Find What Excites You at Work

Are you tired of doing the same thing at work? Step back and look at the things you do enjoy. When coworkers go on vacation, you might find yourself shouldering more of their workload. It’s an easy knee-jerk reaction to get angry when this happens. But there’s a possible hidden benefit when this happens.

What if you find yourself enjoying some of those temporary responsibilities? Maybe you can pursue opportunities to do that kind of work permanently. By changing your work duties, you may find yourself looking forward to work again.

Beating the Workplace Summer Slump Tip #4: Reach Out to Others

When you’re in a summer funk, it’s easy to withdraw from others. But it’s also not healthy. Human beings are social creatures. The more we are cut off from others, the more we suffer. There’s a reason why solitary confinement is viewed as the most extreme form of imprisonment! Reaching out to others is an effective way to break out of a slump.

Look around you. Are your colleagues in a similar slump? Are they overworked because of the extra work while others are off? Ask your coworkers how they are. Could they use an extra hand? And you don’t have to limit yourself to your coworkers. Catch the attention of the management above you. Look for feedback or ways to improve at work.

The key here is twofold: one, connecting with others socially. And secondly, seek out feedback to find out if you can boost your job performance.
